REVIEW: Hannah Tate, Beyond Repair by Laura Piper Lee

Hannah Tate, Beyond Repair by Laura Piper Lee
Genre: Adult Romance
Publishing Date: February 13, 2024

Synopsis:
Hannah Tate can hardly believe her sleep-deprived eyes when she finds an engagement ring hidden in the closet. Killian, her super responsible, incredibly attractive boyfriend—and
the father of her new baby, Bowie—is finally going to propose. But a romantic night out goes horribly wrong when Killian reveals he’s dumping Hannah, not proposing. Furious and heartbroken, Hannah takes Bowie and moves in with her mama and stepdaddy in the mountains of Blue Ridge, Georgia. Hannah realizes that her parents’ cabin has vacation property gold written all over it—and could save her mama from going broke. Again.
Only problem? The cabin’s décor is .. . mildly terrifying and it’s in desperate need of renovation. Hannah hires the hot carpenter living in the treehouse next door to fix up the place. Not only does River respect Hannah’s business acumen, he looks at her like she’s a woman, not a hot mess. And Hannah can’t deny that River awakens something new inside her. Can Hannah embrace a future that looks different from the picture-perfect family she once dreamed of . . . and maybe start living life on her own terms?

Book Review

This story really displays raw emotions regarding new motherhood and the struggles mothers go through in trying to navigate not feeling guilty while still taking time to care for themselves. There were so many realistic moments showing the balance between the joy of motherhood and the exhaustion and loss of one's former self. The author was unafraid to delve into these more challenging topics while keeping a level of humor and lightheartedness at the same time. I was also pleasantly surprised to see multiple examples of queer representation, including our Bi main character, especially in Appalachia! I enjoyed that bi-erausre was touched on, even coming from other queer characters, which is unfortunately still a common experience. The representation felt natural and commonplace within the story, which is also refreshing. I actually ended up loving these aspects of the plot, as well as the growth and family development, over the actual romance elements.

One thing I did struggle with was that everyone kept referring to the stepdad as Big Daddy and I personally just couldn’t get behind that LOL. The love interest was not my favorite, and I did find some of the inner monologues of our main character cliche or unrealistic at times, but this was still a fun story with nostalgic HGTV vibes.

*** Thank you to the author and TBRandBeyondTours for my copy in exchange for my honest review.

About the Author:
Laura Piper Lee writes lots of things–desperate pleas to her partner for emergency caffeine, to-do lists that never get done, impassioned texts on her favorite supplements (it’s Berberine, look it up)–but she only gets paid to write adult romantic comedies featuring characters as hapless as she is.
