MY REVIEW

What it’s about: CeCe and Silvie, AKA #Cevie as their massive internet community knows them, until Silvie breaks up with CeCe. CeCe is obsessed with making her life seem perfect to the internet, locking away her true thoughts in fear of being canceled or attacked online. The internet is vicious. Now more than ever, she is desperate not to lose her followers like she lost Silvie. But then CeCe meets Josh— violin-playing, dorky, internet-clueless, Josh. Josh hates social media and before she can change her mind, CeCe decides to keep her internet fame a secret from him, and discovers it’s nice to live in the real world. But her secrets start catching up to her and the internet has no sense of private vs public life.

My thoughts: This book was so good and addictive too! I really got lost in the story and read the majority in one sitting. Firstly, the social issues commentary was so good and definitely accurate in today’s world. But, I also loved that it still focused on the personal life of CeCe too. CeCe is an amazing character, and I think she is the most relatable character to me personally that I’ve ever read. It was scarily accurate honestly! The bisexual representation was AMAZING and the discussions of invalidation bisexual people face was equally incredible. The family dynamics, especially her relationship with her conservative father, were very real and relatable to so many queer experiences. I was so happy the book encouraged a message of healthy break ups with healing and no animosity. The focus on self love and acceptance was stunning. I adored Josh, he was so cute and dorky and added a great perspective to the story. This was one of the first books I’ve read about social media consequences and I really enjoyed it. Everyone can relate to cancel culture, either from experiencing it or participating in it, so I think it’s a valuable lesson to be learned. Check this one out!

About the Author:

Jessica Verdi is an author of books for kids and teens about identity, family, acceptance, and love.Though she’s always been a bookworm (her childhood was basically defined by the philosophy that working your way through giant stacks of library books is far superior to playing outside), she remained convinced throughout high school and college that theatre and music were meant to be her creative outlets. After nearly ten years in the NYC theatre world, she got an idea for a novel. While that first attempt at a “book” will never see the light of daynope, don’t askit was the book that started her love affair with writing. Now she can’t imagine doing anything else.Jess received her MFA in Writing for Children from The New School and is a freelance editor of romance and women’s fiction. She lives in New York with her family.
